Class 1 - Newsletter - Summer 2008
Dear Parents
Welcome back to a new school term in Class 1. We have already made a start on our topics and we are very excited about activities planned for later in the term. Our topics for the first half are as follows:
- In Science we are learning about forces and motion.
- In History our topic is The Great Fire of London.
- In Art, the focus is observational drawing.
- In Religious Education we are learning about weddings with a main focus on Church weddings. The climax of our work on weddings will be a mock celebration when children will dress up in 'wedding clothes'. If your child has any dressing up clothes suitable for a wedding - bridesmaid, page boy, fancy clothes or hats we would be very grateful if you could send them in with your child.
This half term PE will be on Mondays and Thursdays. After half term, years 1 and 2 will be swimming on a Wednesday so PE will be Mondays and Wednesdays in the second half of the term. If you are planning to buy new swimming kit for your child please remember that girls will need a one piece swimming costume and boys will need swimming trunks - not swimming shorts please. Swimming hats and arm bands are optional.
If you have a year 2 child, he or she will be involved in SAT tests this year. These are tests which all year 2 children take in Reading, Writing and Maths. Your child has had plenty of practise in these types of tests and they should not cause any problems. If you would like more information on the tests and their format I would be happy to see you any day after school.
In the second half of the term our main topic will be on the seaside. We plan to take the children to Hunstanton and also to the Sealife Centre. More information about this will follow.
Some useful websites:
www.ictgames.co.uk: a really good website for key stage one maths and literacy. Fun games that your child will want to try!
www.mathszone.com: lots of fun maths games an activities - select key stage 1 from the menu.
www.bbc.co.uk/schools: this website has a wealth of information and activities for all areas of the curriculum and for all ages.
If you have any questions about any of the above or indeed any aspect of life in class 1, please do not hesitate to come and see me. I am available after school most days except Friday afternoons.
Yours sincerely
Hilary Platts
